The Ten Suggestions of God

May 7th, 2007 by wilowdbase

By Gary Kurz Most of us have heard preachers passionately warn in their sermons, “They are not the ten suggestions; they are the ten commandments”. Factually, no one can argue that point. Indeed, no one should argue that point. God gave us commandments. He did not mince his words. He said “thou shall” and “thou shall not”. Practically speaking however, as we apply the commandments to our lives, we might do well to consider them as being suggestions as well. In no way does this diminish the authoritative intent of these providential edicts. Rather, acknowledging the suggestive tone of the commandments underscores the importance of obeying them and reflects a little more on how they should impact positively upon our lives. As commandments, or law, we all fail miserably at keeping them. Is there one who has not lied? Is there one who has not coveted? The question is rhetoric as scripture already provides the answer for us in Romans 3:23 (kjv), where it says: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. The chapter goes on to tell us that all are guilty before God. When an elderly preacher was asked by a young Christian what the word “all” meant in that verse, the wise old servant replied “All means all and that is all, all means”. In other words, the verse says not some, not many, not even most, but all are guilty of sin and all have broken the commandments. Armed with this knowledge, one might question why God gave us the commandments at all. If we were all not able to keep them, if we were all guilty of breaking them in God’s eyes, then why even go through the drill of trying to keep them? Is God testing us? Is God tricking us? Is he being some kind of a bully, who, because he has the power, can just force his will upon us and order us to keep his commandments, or else? If one views the commandments exclusively as commandments, one might arrive at that incorrect conclusion. However, if we also view the commandments as guidance or suggestions on how to live our lives, we can draw a clearer picture on just why God gave them to us. Simply, God knows us. He made us. He searches hearts and knows the inner-most thoughts of men and women. He understands our old nature and how it contrasts with his holiness. In a perfect world (which he tried to give to us) we would live righteously and holy. There would be no need for commandments, because there would be no sin. Of course, this is not a perfect world. Sin is present and often wields great influence over people, even Christians. Knowing our propensity to give in to temptation, God gave us commandments that would educate us about sin. That is why he referred to the law as our “schoolmaster” in the epistles. He didn’t lay these commandments upon us because he is the boss and we have to listen to him. He gave them to us because he loves us. He knew the hardships and suffering that would come from doing evil and he wanted to protect us from all of that. God knows that if we steal, for example, it will hurt not only those we steal from, but it will hurt us as well. First, there are the ramifications that come if one is caught stealing. You may be tasked with making restitution to those you stole from. You may be assigned many hours of arduous community service. You may even be incarcerated. Next, there comes societal scorn and a ruined reputation as you are branded a thief. You lose friends and credibility. You have a record and authorities keep close tabs on you and your activities. It is harder to find good work. Generally, everything in life becomes a little bit more difficult for you. Finally, if the previous results do not deter you from stealing again, your conscience might grow weak it will become easier for you to steal again. Eventually, you will lose your conscience altogether and become progressively more reprobate. Breaking any of the commandments can have similar disastrous effects upon your life and upon the lives of those you love. For that reason, the commandments become practical suggestions on how you should conduct yourself in life. Moreover, as suggestions or guidance, the commandments carry promises or rewards with them. For example, we are told in the fifth commandment that if we honor our father and our mother, our life will be long on the earth. As commandments, an “or else” connotation is inferred, but as suggestions for living righteously we are given positive incentives. Without doubt, the commandments should first be viewed as commandments. They are the will of God for mankind. But they should also be viewed as providential tutorials for successful living, where God offers good results for those who keep them. We are faced with many decisions in life. God has given us free will to make choices. This free will to choose applies to the Ten Commandments. You may choose to abide by them or you may choose to ignore them. You have free will. If you want a long and successful life, God’s counsel, God’s suggestion, is that you incorporate these ideals into your life. The author is a Baptist Preacher and Bible Teacher. He helps those grieving the loss of a pet to understand the Biblical evidence that proves they live on. Dating Bliss For Singles And Those In A Relationship 4

April 29th, 2007 by wilowdbase

By Sebastian Foss AVOID TOO SHORT OR TOO LONG A COURTSHIP When two people are in love, they are sometimes blind to reality and deaf to sound counsel. However, he that has hears should hear heed the voice of the Spirit. SHORT COURTSHIP IS DANGEROUS SO ALSO IS TOO LONG A COURTSHIP; there must be a balance. To meet someone and rush into marriage shortly afterwards. Like say within three months may lead to disaster when reality dawns. To also court between a range of five-ten or fifteen years is also an open door and open invitation to trouble materially, emotionally and otherwise. My personal counsel is that courtship should not be less than six months and should not be more than two years. No matter how long you court someone, you can never fully know and understand everything about him/her. There are some things you will know about your partner until you both married and live together. Some singles court for too long because they started too early and some court for a short time because they start too late, so let there be a balance. DON’T MEDITATE OR DWELL ON YOUR SINGLENESS Many look and appear older than their age because they spend too much time on fear, worry and anxiety. No matter your age and the circumstance surrounding you, keep praying and trusting God for breakthrough. It’s not over until it is over. DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN CHANGE. CHANGE IT DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT YOU CANNOT CHANGE –TRUST GOD. Don’t rehearse your situation and challenges, disperse them so that God can reverse them. To dwell or meditate on your singleness is to allow worry and anxiety magnify your real state and make it appear bigger than God. GOD IS BIGGER THAN YOUR PROBLEM. Why worry when you can pray? Nobody has been able to miraculously attract a spouse with anxiety and worry, so if worrying cannot change your status, why not choose to be happy and enjoy where you are on your way to where you are going. NEVER MOURN YOUR SINGLENESS BECAUSE YOUR PRESENT STATE IS NOT YOUR FINAL STATUS DON’T MARRY UNDER A WAVE OF SEXUAL PASSION Sex is part of marriage, but marriage is more than sex. To allow sexual passion be your motivation for marriage is to allow your emotion lead you than the Spirit. Also, you are bound to mistaken your lust for the real thing – LOVE. The Bible says we should be led by the Spirit of God and not by the Physique of men or else we are inviting trouble and building on sinking sand. Many people have allowed infatuation and lust to lead them into a relationship only to discover that they have been wrongly led. Intimacy is more than sex, and sexual intimacy cannot be intimacy being in place. Before you allow sexual passion delude you, look out for spiritual flow and emotional flow because they both determine the end product of your passion. DON’T MARRY TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM In marriage one plus one equals one, to produce a whole marriage. But half plus half or half-plus one equals to imbalance. A man that marries because he has a problem with lust is in for a shocking surprise, because marriage will only further turn you loose. Anyone that has problem with lust should deal with it and overcome it before getting married. Sisters should not get married just because they have problem with their household because marriage is not an escape route from domestic problems, neither is it a hospital for treating sickness. Many people have allowed themselves to be caged because they wrongly entered a relationship to use it, but ended up being caged. IF YOU MARRY TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM, YOU MIGHT BE EXCHANGING ONE SET OF PROBLEM FOR ANOTHER. God expects you to marry for positive reasons and not by negative motivations. On Top of Spaghetti: A Few Facts About Meatballs

April 25th, 2007 by wilowdbase

By Nancy Mure Meatballs anyone? Most people love em! It’s the traditional start to the Sunday dinner in most Italian families, served warm with fresh mozzarella cheese, crisp italian bread and fried hot peppers. Whether they are fresh from the pot, or simply gracing a heap of spaghetti, nothing beats a meatball! Here’s an amazing fact about making meatballs: Give ten people the same basic recipe and each batch will turn out differently. Go figure… No one really knows the true origin of the meatball but in an 2003 article entitled “Ask the Chef” John Piso describes it this way: “Meatballs originated in some Italian’s kitchen when she found that she had some ground beef left over. Hamburger meat was popularized at the turn of the last century, so it makes sense to assume that meatballs started then, as did meat loaf. I could just see some nice Italian housewife ready to make a tomato sauce and find some left over ground meat in her ice-a -box-a. Always having eggs, parsley, garlic, cheese, and hard bread around, she must have felt a surge of lightning that hit her with this idea. Ground meat, garlic, cheese, breadcrumbs, parsley, and some beaten egg to hold it all together. Fry it in oil; drop it in the sauce and Bingo! Two courses in one pot - pure genius!” Then comes what I call the “Christopher Columbus” question about meatballs…Why are meatballs round? Because it’s a meat-ball, silly. Actually, if meatballs were flat, they’d break apart when stirred in tomato sauce. Hand size is also a factor. Big hand, big meatball, small hand, small meatball. Wikipedia, The Free Online Encyclopedia, describes a meatball as “a generally spherical mass of minced meat and other ingredients, such as bread or breadcrumbs, minced onion, various spices or eggs, usually fried in a pan or baked in an oven. Except for shape and size (there’s usually more than one meatball per serving), meatballs are very similar to meatloaf.” That may be half true. A meatball is only similar to a meatloaf because of the ingredients that cement it togther. The meatloaf is a traditional American dish, made in a loaf form, sometimes stuffed, sliced and covered in brown gravy. A meatball is the stuff that dreams are made of because there’s a nostagia factor here: I recall sleeping in on a Sunday morning and waking to the most delicious smell in the world, then entering the kitchen and hearing that sweet sound of meatballs sizzling in a frying pan….it’s always so hard to resist grabbing one. Can’t get that feeling from a meatloaf! Is a meatball by any other name still a meatball? The answer is Yes, because one ingredient remains constant: Ground Beef. The ancient Roman cook-book author Apicius included many meat ball-type recipes: • Albanian fried meatballs (Qofte të fërguara) include feta cheese. • Danish meatballs are known as frikadeller and are typically fried, and they are usually made from pork. • In Germany, meatballs are called Frikadellen (in the North) or Buletten (in the East) or Fleischpflanzerl or Fleischküchle if you happen to be in the South • In Greece, meatballs are called ‘keftedes’ and usually include within the mix onions and mint leaf. • In Italy, meatballs are know as polpette. Outside of Italy, they are commonly served with spaghetti as in “spaghetti and meatballs”. • The Japanese hamburger steak hanbagu is based on similar ingredients. • In Norway, meatballs are called kjøttkaker (”meat cakes”) and resemble Danish frikadeller, but they are usually made from ground beef. The dish is traditionally served with boiled potatoes, gravy, lingonberry jam and/or stewed green peas. Some people also like to add fried/caramelized onion on the side. • Swedish köttbullar (Swedish meatballs) are made with ground beef or a mix of ground beef and pork, mixed with breadcrumbs soaked in milk and finely chopped onions. They are seasoned with white pepper and salt. Swedish meatballs are traditionally served with gravy, boiled potatoes, lingonberry jam, and fresh pickled cucumber. (In the television show Babylon 5 all alien races have swedish meatballs, although with different names) • Turkish cuisine features more than 80 types of meatballs (köfte), most being regionally made. The meatball is so well loved that we even sing about it. Check out the American classic “On top of Spaghetti” by Tom Glazer which features a wayward meatball. For decades he had a chorus of children singing lines like: On top of spaghetti all covered with cheese. I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed. It rolled off the table, it rolled on the floor, And then my poor meatball rolled out of the door. It rolled in the garden and under a bush, And then my poor meatball was nothing but mush. The mush was as tasty as tasty could be, And early next summer it grew to a tree. The tree was all covered with beautiful moss. It grew great big meatballs and tomato sauce. So if you eat spaghetti all covered with cheese, Hold on to your meatball and don’t ever sneeze. Now that I’ve told you all these wonderful facts about the Meatball, here’s some friendly advice: It isn’t very nice to call someone a “Meatball”. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition defines calling someone a meatball the same as calling them dull or stupid. So if you must use mention of food in your name-calling endeavors, I’d suggest you call ‘em a “Meatloaf!” Nancy S. Vashti, Esther and Their Man

April 23rd, 2007 by wilowdbase

By Linda Leon There are lots of men in the Bible who have been nuts, but King Ahasuerus wins the golden award. This man had the biggest party the Middle East had ever seen. It lasted for weeks. In the midst of his debauchery, in a drunken stupor, he called for his wife to do a strip tease act in front of all of his royal friends. I don’t know what got into Queen Vashti that day, but she decided, this is it! I am not putting up with this man any longer. She sent a message back to Ahasuerus that simply said, no. He was so embarrassed that he did not know what to do. The queen had said no, and he was the king. This could not be happening in front of all of his rich buddies. If she could stand up to him, what would they think and all the other women in the kingdom that would surely hear of this act of defiance. Though after his anger was pacified, he thought about his relationship with Vashti, but his royal dignity had been damaged. So his buddies cooked up a quick scheme, get rid of Vashti and find another queen. They pulled this off magnificently. After they had sent Vashti packing, they held a nationwide beauty pageant of virgins only. And after going through a harem of virgins, Ahasuerus fell for a Jewish beauty named Esther and crowned her the new queen. His party going days were over. He had learned something and would not risk ruining this marriage. Esther had his number such that he declared to her on more than one occasion, I will give you up to half of my kingdom. Don’t you know Vashti had probably heard about this? Can you imagine how she must have felt? But this is my point to dejected women. You must remember that the man you left (if he truly changed) is not the man that the other woman married. The man that she got is the one who has learned from his failure with your relationship. It has caused him to be more cautious and to treat her in a way that will not repeat what happened to you. You must also remember that the man you left, had treated you poorly and it is a good thing that you have another opportunity to begin again. Don’t waste your energy on the heartache caused by what you know of his new relationship. It is unfortunate that he did not learn to change while you were there. You have been given an opportunity to begin again, ask God to send you the true love of your life. The bible never mentions Vashti again, but in my heart I believe that she learned to enjoy the freedom that she was given and was more than likely remarried to another of great wealth. Her resistance to his injustice shows that she was a bold woman and I believe that she eventually found someone that appreciated that. There is hope for you and a brighter future ahead, if you do not allow the hurt of your loss to control you. God can give you a good man. What’s So Great About Feta Cheese?

April 18th, 2007 by wilowdbase

By Lee Dobbins Cheese. Just a mere mention of the word and one would think of sumptuous appetizers or meals served with them. Cheese, when served with wine, depicts impeccable taste and class. Here is but one of the many varieties of cheeses: Meet the Feta Cheese. Feta (from the Italian word ‘fetta’ meaning ’slice’) is actually cheese curd in brine solution. It takes at least three months to make feta. When it is removed from the solution, this type of cheese dries up immediately. Milk from goats, sheep or cow can be used to make this. The color of Feta cheese is white. It is usually formed into four-sided cakes that can either be soft or semi-hard. Its salty flavor can be adjusted to suit the taste of the maker. Traditionally, in Greece, feta cheese is made with just goat’s milk or a combination of goat’s and sheep’s milk. They are first salted as a slab, then sliced, then salted once more before it is subjected to maturation process. Other countries that make feta cheese include: Albania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia, Ukraine, Romania, Iran, Australia, Denmark, Germany and many other countries. Although feta is called differently in each country, the process of manufacturing it is the same. The first historic record of feta cheese was during the Byzantine time. One Italian who visited Candia (in 1494) made a vivid description of the brine solution used in making feta cheese. Additional records are those of Balkan peasants who made it either with sheep’s or goat’s milk. Nowadays, cow’s milk can be used to make feta cheese. The processes involved are: curdling of the milk with rennet, separation and draining of the curd, putting salt on the blocks of curd, slicing the slabs which are then salted once more. Feta is usually used in making salads and is much tastier when combined with tomatoes, olives and green vegetables. One can store feta cheese indefinitely because of the salt solution. A wise tip: if you want to reduce the saltiness of the cheese, soak feta first in milk or water (just for a few minutes) before eating. Now here is some important nutritional information: it contains 30-60% fat of which 45% is fat from milk. The caloric content is 100 calories per small slice. Whether that’s good or bad for you is a question you need to ask your nutritionist. There were actually some studies that were done to lower the salinity of feta cheese and how this has significantly improved its nutritional value. The conclusion was, it has good and bad points. The good: it is a superior source of riboflavin, protein, calcium, phosphorus and Vitamin B12. The bad: it has a high cholesterol and sodium content. It comes with high saturated fat. Another downside to eating feta cheese: pregnancy would not allow feta cheese consumption. Since feta is made from unpasteurized milk and comes in soft, it may contain a type of bacteria called Listeria. Although Listeria registers symptoms like that of the common flu and can be tolerated by adults, it is highly fatal to fetuses. Could you take another bad news? It is very difficult to get the real thing in the country. Since it is highly consumable in Greece and because of the restriction on importing products made with unpasteurized milk, Americans can have a taste of feta through commercial counterparts. Although the commercial feta cheeses are inferior in most aspects, at least they are the closest we could get to feta taste. If you are looking for the ‘original’ cheese, then be prepared to pay exorbitant fees! Enough with the bad. There are more good to this type of cheese than the occasional bad. Feta cheese is used in a lot of sumptuous recipes which stimulate the taste buds and it is highly-incorporated in most Greek meals. Here are a few recipes that you could research online: 1. Chunky guacamole (or Guacamole Picado) 2. Goat Cheese Patties 3. Feta and Ricotta Cheese Fondue 4. Greek Scramble 5. Lamb and Olive Balls 6. Lemony Artichokes with Feta and Oregano 7. Lobster bundles 8. Mediterranean Feta Cheese Dip 9. Leg of Lamb Stuffed with Roasted Garlic, Feta and Basil Leaves 10. Spinach Triangles (Spanakopita) Aren’t the recipes enough to convince you that there is more good to feta cheese than bad? If you’re not convinced and would want to decline a nice meal with feta in it, then believe me, you’re definitely missing one half of your life! A Fly Fisher’s Respect for Nature

April 16th, 2007 by wilowdbase

By Steve Robbins Are fly fishers truly good stewards of our God given natural resources? I’d like to think so but I’m not so sure that all of us are. I would venture to assume that in fly fishing, the gentleman’s sport, we have the ethical fibers within us that drive us to take good care of our rivers, lakes and streams. Is this an accurate assumption? Over the last 10 years, fly fishing has certainly been one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in North America. With this growth we’re sure to attract those who are less ecologically conscious that we’d like. We can strive to create public awareness in the fly fishing community yet probably the best place to start is with ourselves. Marjory Douglass wrote, “The future lies within the strength with which man can set his powers of creation against his impulses for destruction.” Now don’t get me wrong. I would definitely never pass as a purist tree hugger. I do not intend to preach but I think there area few things that we can look at. It truly hurts me to be on a beautiful stream to come upon the discarded remains of human presence that include water bottles, beer cans and cigarette butts. I know you’ve all hear one of the backpackers code of ethics, “if you pack it in then pack it out”. One pressing issue to consider for us nymphers is lead shot. Is it an eco sin to use lead split shot instead of tin? Of course it is! Lead is toxic and kills living creatures and you cannot seriously consider yourself a conservationist if you are intentionally putting lead into nature. Now, the lead that is accidentally dropped into nature by fly fishermen is surely a fraction of one percent of the total amount of lead that flies out of shotguns nationwide and lands in the wild, so why bother us with the issue? Because every little bit hurts. How many times have you seen a wadded and tangled leader in the stream? Have you seen the horrible images of wildlife becoming tangled in the mass of monofilament? Zane Grey wrote, “If I fished only to capture fish, my fishing trips would have ended long ago.” And so it is with most considerate anglers. The thrill of the catch is often overshadowed by nature’s breathtaking grandeur. I love to catch fish as much as anyone. However, when I’m all alone and think back to my fly fishing adventures, I think less of the individual fish that I caught than of the places that I’ve been and settings in which I’ve fished. Fly fisherman become a part of the waters they fish. As naturalist John Muir observed, “When one tugs on a single thing in nature, one finds it attached to the rest of the world.” We must approach our pristine waters with respect. If we do this, then perhaps we gain its total amount of enjoyment. The fish aren’t always biting, but Mother Nature is always watching. The Tossing Of The Bridal Bouquet: A Tradition That Still Lives Today

April 14th, 2007 by wilowdbase

By Bonnie Ray Even though it is a well-liked tradition recognized at lots of weddings, tossing the cascading bridal bouquet is a tradition that you, the bride can choose to either have or leave out of your ceremony. Its representative custom says that the single woman who catches the cascading bridal bouquet will be the next to get married. Even if there are no guarantees, tossing the cascading bridal bouquet is an amusing way for one lucky guest to take home a one-of-a-kind cascading bridal bouquet memento. The tradition of tossing the cascading bridal bouquet began with the early belief that good luck herbs were inside the cascading bridal bouquet. In an effort to pass her good fortune on to her wedding guests, the bride would throw her bouquet to one lucky female guest at the end of the wedding. Nowadays, that belief remains intact and so it is recommended that brides who plan to toss the bouquet should have a small, matching cascading bridal bouquet created especially for this tradition so that they can keep the original. I did it at my wedding. There are more than a few options to consider when tossing the cascading bridal bouquet. If there is a special person that you wish to present the cascading bridal bouquet to, you can get her in private with you and offer her the cascading bridal bouquet memento. Another fun alternative to tossing the cascading bridal bouquet is the fake-out. You, the bride, would select a woman who you wish to catch the cascading bridal bouquet and aim your cascading bridal bouquet directly to her. Of course, the other choice is the fair toss. Tossing the cascading bridal bouquet is a tradition that can be included in your wedding, but never feel as though you have to follow any rules. The loveliness of your wedding is that it is your special day and you can decide which customs to use and which others you would prefer to leave out. If you are planning to have a cascading bridal bouquet designed in particular for tossing, you may want to think about using silk flowers so that the woman who catches it will be able to preserve this precious memento. Of course, fresh flowers are beautiful, but they will not last. Superior silk flowers, however, will last forever if taken care of accurately. Also, silk cascading bridal bouquets can be arranged to look just as gorgeous as the real thing.
